It’s always dangerous to make an animation of something that is on your mind. But this time I couldn’t resist. You can watch it after the break. The idea behind visualizing “presence” is that although we can communicate with our friends through phone or social networking sites, there is always a certain distance between each other. Do you really feel connected with one of your 300 friends if he/she is online and you are too?
But what if you would have a representation of your real friends in your living room, telling you when they are also in their living room (or kitchen)? Wouldn’t you feel more connected with them? And if there was a way to abstractly communicate with them, wouldn’t you use this to say hello? I would.
The visualisation uses a hexagonal pattern but that is just an Idea I have right now. It could also be bars or Tangram patterns or …furniture? There are a lot of possibilities to display ‘presence’ but one question remains: “(why) hasn’t this been done before?” Anyone?
