The figure above gives a technical overview of the setup in a home. The information cycle starts with a current transformer that is clipped on a mains wire (1). This generates a current that is proportional to the current flowing through the wire. The Sensor Station (2) measures this and calculates the real power consumption. The result is wirelessly sent to the Hub (3). This hub uploads the data to the internet through a router where it is stored in a database (4). The data of all the competitors gets processed ‘in the cloud’ and is sent back to each hub. It calculates for instance the average energy usage of every user over the last 15 minutes. The hub forwards this information wirelessly to the display (5) where it gets interpreted. Depending on the situation, the user sees a different visualization.

Title:Creating an energy competition between households Abstract: This thesis describes an experiment in which households enter an energy competition. In order to rank first, their electricity consumption must be the least over a certain period. Information about their usage and that of their competitors is visualized inside the homes on a display where instead of numbers, words light up. The reason for this is that numbers in kWh and Euros could be difficult to understand for participants and therefore could be misinterpreted by them. In this case, the display interprets the numbers and tells the competitors if they are doing well or not in comparison with the others. Besides reporting on the experiment, this thesis also houses a technical part in which the building of the different blocks -needed to do this experiment- is described.
